Meet the Makers: Don Fisher

We first encountered the wonders of Don Fisher in a tiny design store in the heart of Palma, Mallorca last summer. Don Fisher are a Spanish design studio who create beautifully crafted, brilliantly illustrated and pleasingly amusing fish!

We spoke to Lorena at Don Fisher about their inspirations, workspace, life lessons and what kind of fish they would be.

Can you tell us a bit about Don Fisher and your workspace?

Don Fisher was born two years ago when Julia, graphic designer and creator, thought she had to change her life. She enjoyed pinning beautiful things in Pinterest so thought about creating an online shop where she could sell beautiful things. This proved a bit too expensive!

She then started thinking about the word “beautiful” in Spanish, "bonito". This is also the name of a fish and her mum asked, "why don't you make "bonitos" as fish-shaped cases?” …and that's exactly what she did because mums are always right.

Our workspace is Julia's dining room, that's where we usually meet to work together. We hope we can change this sometime soon!

Why do you do what you do?

We do this because we both love design and also because we think we can make people smile with our fishy creations.

What is the most important lesson that you’ve learnt (through work or life!)?

Believe in yourself, work hard and never give up. Quite cliché but so difficult to understand and apply.

Who are your design heroes?

We have lots of design heroes! Our fellow Spanish designers Adriana Esperalba (Bobo Choses Art Director) and Verónica de Arriba (Depeapá designer) are both big inspirations.

What is your most treasured possession?

We are not very materialistic but probably we would say our family albums. Lots of memories from our pre-iPhone era!

If you were a fish, what would you be?

We would be small sardines, modest and discreet.
