Make Tracks: Kangan Arora

Who are you?
I'm Kangan Arora, I grew up in India and have been at home in London for 10 years or more, founding my Design Studio in 2011.

What do you do?
While the output of the studio is becoming ever more diverse, I’m a surface designer by nature, producing my own label of soft-furnishings, textiles and rugs, while also collaborating with other design and fashion brands.

Much of the sampling and soft furnishings are hand-screen printed in my studio in South London, while the quilted textiles and hand woven, tufted rugs are made in India.
More recently, I've worked on a branding and packaging project for a high-street name, launching in a few months’ time. I’m sworn to secrecy but super excited about it!

What can you see from your studio window?
Well technically, the only window I have in my studio is a sky light above the printing table. So the view’s not great, but it floods the space with a wonderful diffused quality of light and is pretty handy in never needing to look at the Met office app for the forecast!

So without a window to look out of, I tend to cast eyes around our neighbour’s studios – there’s an amazing 120 year old Arab crown folio letterpress right across my print table in the adjacent space, which is quite a pleasing sight!
